Fakey (Fake Jewell): Please can you let me know if you don’t want to be selected to start off the feedback.

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): goat1

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): 🐐 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙂𝙤𝙖𝙩 🐐

Chantal Harvey: so far, we have 4 films in to show, there is room for 1 more, so if you have a link – send to my im please

Chantal Harvey: for the new people here, let me explain: before your film is shown, i will ask if you want to introduce it first, and if you want feedback after – both are optional

Chantal Harvey: then, after the film, ONE person is selected by Fakey – to give respectful and hones feedback. After that, we all weigh in

Chantal Harvey: filmmlinks always to my im

Chantal Harvey: all genres and games are allowed, even ai

Fakey (Fake Jewell): So if you don’t want to be selected first (I put it through a Google random number generator) please let me know in IM’s

Chantal Harvey: the first filmmaker today is Goddess! wanna introduce the film, and want feedback after?

Easy Streaming TV: You do not have access to this TV. (Menu access set to LIST)

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Yes I always want the feedback.. t helps me to improve.

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): I was told I should make a Sci Fi video, so I did. Star Wars came to my mind. The start of the video tell’s what the story is about.

Chantal Harvey: shall we watch? we watch on the big screen here, todaether

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): that’s about it.

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Thank You

Debs (DebbieStick): Applauds

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19) claps

M. L’vovich (TSym): красивый клип

TSym ru>en: beautiful clip

Opal Lei applauds!

DallyEvans: very good

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): SF fun!!

Fakey (Fake Jewell): The random number generator picked me, Goddess. So here goes. I really liked the space shots, and I loved the storm trooper drumming.

Easy Streaming TV: You do not have access to this TV. (Menu access set to LIST)

fyre (fyreflower): Wooot

Dor (Dorian Cao): .ap

Dor (Dorian Cao): Applause!!

Fakey (Fake Jewell): The only thing that didn’t work for me so well was the fight scenes. They seemed rather repetitive, and the physics meant that the light sabers were going through folks.

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Otherwise – excellent.

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Thank you.

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Does the feedback work for you?

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Yes, I use a sword fight hud so I put it together best I could,  know the physics dindt really work, but I just tried to get teh story across.

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Absolutely – thank you.

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Oh yes, ‘m always happy with feedback no matter what

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Please feel free to weigh in everyone.

Chantal Harvey: thats a great spirit, goddess

Udah (VampireAndVegan): For some reason, i particularly liked it when folks were struck down and fell to the floor. I don’t know why… The troopers playing instruments also worked well for me.

Chantal Harvey: i loved the music, its original? and the video feels fresh, fun

Pryda (Pryda Parx): I liked that one. I liked the way the spaceships arrived at the start, and the sets and details in the characters. It was a good idea combining a music video with the Star Wars theme, the music wasn’t particularly Star Warsy though

Shonda Evans: I enjoed it. Some parts reminded me of the animated movie Heavy metal.

Dash Renoir: like the sets … the band: i’m a fav of strat’s & rick’s; cool trying to sync drums ……

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): I thought it was a fun video, love the band playing and the whole SF vibe of the machinima, was fun!!

Dash Renoir: same question re song?

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Yes, I wrote the lyrics, but I use Suno to make the music

Udah (VampireAndVegan): I loved the Heavy Metal movie!

Opal Lei: I initially thought it would be a storytelling, so the stormtroopers with the guitars threw me off. Then I realized it’s a music video and the lyrics told the story. Very nicely done. 🙂

Shonda Evans: Me too!!

Dash Renoir: dug the lyrics

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Right, I really only make music videos and try to tel the stories through them

Udah (VampireAndVegan): Great job!

Chantal Harvey: i like it that its girls involved, be it dark side or not 🙂

Shonda Evans: Indeed

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Thank You

Chantal Harvey: are there questions for goddess?

DallyEvans: I didn’t understand the connection between the fighting and the conversion of the princess into dark queen acolyte

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): evil princesses always work lol

Chantal Harvey: and pls subscribe and like, to her channel?

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Oh please Subscribe and Ill sub to you too

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): subscribed

Udah (VampireAndVegan): Done

Shonda Evans: ditto

Chantal Harvey: i see goddess type, an answer to dally?

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Sometimes t’s difficult to convey all the details in a video, like how the Princess turned. I try to show it, It’s just not always so clear to others.

Chantal Harvey: that was good feedback, in a question, dally

Chantal Harvey: 🙂

Chantal Harvey: ok, shall we go to the next filmmaker?

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): yep

Chantal Harvey: Shonda, wanna introduce the film, and feedback after?

Shonda Evans: Sure

Shonda Evans: This is a video I made about a year ago…I wanted to present it to the group for feed back. I am aware of the clipping and glitchy animations. The video is about a couple having an affair. The wife keeps calling and  interrupting

Chantal Harvey: shall we watch?

Shonda Evans: sure

Easy Streaming TV: Loading Vimeo video URL.

Debs (DebbieStick): I cant open the mature content

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Ah – I can’t watch it – don’t have a Vimeo account and it’s mature

Chantal Harvey: ohhh

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Oo – that makes me sound 13 years old – Hurrah!

Chantal Harvey: maybe change the privacy settings, shonda?

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): yeah I cannot see it eithter, not for goats it says

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): lol

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): I can see it

Dash Renoir: …. watching

Chantal Harvey: applauds!

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Applauds

Dor (Dorian Cao): Applause!!

Udah (VampireAndVegan): applause!

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): send in a selfie but Vimeo didn’t accept

Saffia Widdershins applauds

Opal Lei applauds!

fyre (fyreflower): WOot

Godiva Varela: good job!

Fakey (Fake Jewell): I know that Dorian could see it – so Dorian will you kick off the feedback?

M. L’vovich (TSym): Очень нежная . вызывающая желания 🙂

TSym ru>en: Very tender. arousing desires 🙂

Dor (Dorian Cao): Sure!

Fakey (Fake Jewell): *please

Dash Renoir: mmm….. i could watch … wasn’t logged into acct tho ??

Dor (Dorian Cao): I liked it!  I mean who doesn’t like a good Bossa Nova!

Dor (Dorian Cao): It was sensual and smexy without being to adult and it worked with the music.

DallyEvans: applauds

Dor (Dorian Cao): The shadow fading around the edges at times was a bit distracting for me, but overall great job!

Shonda Evans: TY

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Does the feedback work for you, Shonda?

M. L’vovich (TSym): а вопрос. в конце когда камера офф у них все получилось ? ))))

TSym ru>en: and the question. at the end when the camera is off did they succeed? ))))

Shonda Evans: Yessss

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): pitty I couldn’t see it…

Chantal Harvey: hehe tsym, good question – i suspect they did

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Awesome – thanks Dorian – please feel free to weigh in everyone

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): I love Billie, the song was so nice. You mentioned about the clipping. We all know how SL works so I really don’t worry about clipping. I understand that’s a little difficult, but your camera work is fantastic! Good job overall!

Udah (VampireAndVegan): I liked the transition effects and the music immediately captured my attention. I would have liked to see each shot held a bit longer so I could take it all in.

Pryda (Pryda Parx): I wasn’t able to watch it, sorry

M. L’vovich (TSym): ❤

Dash Renoir: music on point … ‘mandi bossa nova’   added to my playlist  thx shonda

fyre (fyreflower): I’m not a fan of watching any cheating stuff…so that was a couple role playin’…real good….real real good heehee. I looooved the paper-thin skin spider veins – it held meaning for me too –

Eve Petlyakov: I appreciated the fading edges, it felt *sneaky*. The music choice was great.

Chantal Harvey: i was distracted by the hands going through bodies, and the tongue of the girl. But I lo9ve and adore the combination of the film and the music, well done, and the humor in in works well

DallyEvans: The offputting thing for me was the guy’s fingers poking through stuff, like his cell phone and her hips

fyre (fyreflower): Also, the legs/skin slide shots, I could feel many of them…i adore that

Opal Lei: It was very sexy in a classy way. 🙂

Shonda Evans: TY

Chantal Harvey: yes its very sexy, nicely done, the hotel mood, everything

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19):              *•.¸(‘*•.¸ ♥ ¸.•*´)¸.•*

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19):       .•*♥´¨`•    WOW    •´¨`♥*•.

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19):              ¸.•*(¸.•*´ ♥ `*•.¸)`*•.¸

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): I really missed a cool machinima

Chantal Harvey: nice painting in the set, love that

Opal Lei: It would have been nice to get some indication that it was the wife calling.

Shonda Evans: Fair enough

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): will you show it on anothyer platform as well? since Vimeo is asking for ID and selfie for age verification?

Shonda Evans: I will upload it to youtube

fyre (fyreflower): Chantal same but it was only the one of her hand on the bed that distracted me – I feel like she avoided it a lot well

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): thanks!! I will look at it then

fyre (fyreflower): Thank you Shonda. I love a goos steamy

fyre (fyreflower): good*

Shonda Evans: Smiles   ◕‿◕

Shonda Evans: TY

Debs (DebbieStick): UK is more restricted to adult content. Sites ask for ID.  So best use a VPN to spoof its US or something

Chantal Harvey: yes, vpn is good

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): I’m om VPN

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): then on vimeao you got to proove you;re human too, I just never get away with that

Saffia Widdershins: I am with all the comments here. It was a great interpretation. For me, the only distraction was the oiliness of his skin. It made him look a bit … plastic

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): lol

Chantal Harvey: is that the skin, or using pbr?

Shonda Evans: skin

Shonda Evans: I like my men greasy…lol

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): lol

Chantal Harvey: haha ok

Udah (VampireAndVegan): LOL

DallyEvans: SL crashes when I use VPN

Saffia Widdershins: not sure. I just kept thinking how all that oil would feel ….

fyre (fyreflower): lolz Saffia, I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not…I just kind of watched the shine move – Bhahahaha

Opal Lei: It could be sweat too. 😉

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): oh  my goat that sounds gross

Saffia Widdershins: ugh. Then he has a problem ….

DallyEvans: very oily sweat

Dash Renoir: ( noticing godiva’s skin )

Opal Lei: lol  well, sex is sweaty….

Shonda Evans chuckles

Shonda Evans: \(◕‿◕)/¯

Chantal Harvey: ok!

fyre (fyreflower): 🤣

Chantal Harvey: hey we have a new member of our group here, a machinimamaker, he wants to share his work

Dor (Dorian Cao): …dunno…I remember a fun oil wrestling night when I was younger….  =D

Chantal Harvey: shall we?

Chantal Harvey: l’vovich

Udah (VampireAndVegan): we better…

Chantal Harvey: wanna introduce your film? and feedback after?

Chantal Harvey: TSym

M. L’vovich (TSym): yes

fyre (fyreflower): Dor I may have….trophys

M. L’vovich (TSym): My name is Maxim. This is my first time here, and I would like to present a short video.

It is the final scene from a large theatrical production based on Dante’s The Divine Comedy.

I worked on this production for more than three years. It was performed five times on the stage of the Orchid Theatre.

At the end of the video, you will find a link to the full recording of the entire performance.

And now, a few words about what you are about to see:

Dante has passed through Hell and Purgatory and ascended to the вершину of the mountain.

This place is called the Earthly Paradise — it is here that he meets Beatrice.

A musical fragment, River Flows in You, begins to play.

He sees her and runs toward her with all his strength.

A slight wave of the hand, a few broken, breathless phrases —

and they walk together along the stream.

And the moment his shadow disappears beneath the waterfall,

Mozart’s Lacrimosa begins to sound…

PS: No AI was used when editing the video

fyre (fyreflower): *shakes head yes*

Godiva Varela: bravo!!

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Applause

Dor (Dorian Cao): Applause!!

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19) claps

Udah (VampireAndVegan): applause!

Debs (DebbieStick): Applauds

Saffia Widdershins: That was beautiful

Opal Lei applauds!

Shonda Evans: well done!

Fakey (Fake Jewell): My random number generator has picked Opal to start off the feedback. Opal – are you happy to kick us off?

Opal Lei: sure!

fyre (fyreflower): Woot

Opal Lei: First, i love Mozart’s Requiem and Lacrimosa was very appropriate. I also love how you used hand gestures to tell how they communicated. Very nice story. Very nice implementation.

Opal Lei: That’s it.

M. L’vovich (TSym): спасибо

TSym ru>en: Thank you

Chantal Harvey: is there anything that didnt work for you, Opal?

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Thank you Opal, does the feedback work for you, M L’vovich?

M. L’vovich (TSym): да

TSym ru>en: Yes

Opal Lei: Not really. The sudden pause after he went under the falls indicated that something went wrong. Then he came out in white, so that indicated that he died.

M. L’vovich (TSym): здесь вопрос открытый – я проинтепретировал что да – ведь иначе как он покал в рай ?

TSym ru>en: here the question is open – I interpreted that yes – because otherwise how did he go to heaven?

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Please feel free to weigh in everyone.

Chantal Harvey: first of all – thanks for the music, my favorite, it sends me dreaming straight away. I think you avoided the flaws of second life pretty well, the scene of both sides of the water are very symbolic, and the ending is perfect.

Udah (VampireAndVegan): Music and visuals fit perfectly together. Gestures clearly told the story. Eagle chariot was a great touch. I’d like to watch the whole thing.

Pryda (Pryda Parx): It had a nice operatic feel about it, very well done. The hand and arm gestures were good. I liked the griffin cart too. I thought the editing and camera work was well done. My only complaint was I couldn’t follow the story very well.

Shonda Evans: I agree

Eve Petlyakov: I really appreciated the choreography, the attention to detail in that respect was fantastic. I enjoyed everything about this. My only feedback is I would have like to see facial expressions on the characters.

M. L’vovich (TSym): тогда приходите по ссылка в конце видео и посмотрите всю работу он адлинная но что поделать

TSym ru>en: then follow the link at the end of the video and watch all the work, it’s a long one, but what can you do?

Chantal Harvey: i definately want to see more…

Udah (VampireAndVegan): Is there a way to get characters to actually move faster against the background when they are running? I noticed in a few videos.

fyre (fyreflower): loved the body talk as well, even her eyes at one point when he was about to find her. – this film – had me absorbed in the many reasons I adore SL. The creativity here without a lot of frill even using past works and creating your own. I love it. Plus — I now have another way I haven’t flown yet in SL, eagle-flown chariot!

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): Yes I would love to see the whole show… for me this machinima I would have liked to see the colors somewhat more dramatic maybe…

Chantal Harvey: so you are part of a theatre group in sl?

Godiva Varela: i really liked it, the music is superb, the imagery flew very nicely with the music, really solid good job! What i would advice and/or change, is the windlight, make it a bit more striking and intense, and also make use of different FOV settings for the camera to give it an even more cinematographic look. But i really liked it, great job!

DallyEvans: I thought the flight in the chariot was too long. Other wise excellent. She was in white… His dead wife or lover?

M. L’vovich (TSym): Да у меня были показы этого спектакаля в СЛ

TSym ru>en: Yes, I had screenings of this play in SL

M. L’vovich (TSym): Это Беатрича

TSym ru>en: This is Beatrice

fyre (fyreflower): nods at what Godiva said*

M. L’vovich (TSym): да она умерла

TSym ru>en: yes she died

Chantal Harvey: you should be friends with fakey and dorian !!!

Udah (VampireAndVegan): Godiva, maybe you can give us a tutorial on lighting?

Udah (VampireAndVegan): one day…

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): The hard thing about feedback is trying not to say “I would have” because it’s his vision, his art. I understood the whole thing, just like the gestures worked to tell the story, the Eagle and the Chariot worked. I think it was just a little slow on the Eagle. Maybe if there were a few more clips so it looked like it was flying more. But overall it was really well put together!

Chantal Harvey: yes we should plan some workshops this year! if any of you has an idea, pls let me know

Chantal Harvey: TSym, ty for coming over, and sharing this. We hope to see you back.

M. L’vovich (TSym): у меня есть несколко свежих робот хоть и трагичныш (

TSym ru>en: I have several new robots, although they are tragic (

Udah (VampireAndVegan): I’d like to see them.

Chantal Harvey: hey we have 2 more – short – films. Godiva, did 2 short for linden lab. Pay attention, they are short 🙂

Opal Lei: Tragic is good too. 🙂

Smokin’ GOAT (incident19): cool

M. L’vovich (TSym): давайте в след раз не все с разу же

fyre (fyreflower): Thank you & welcome @M. L’vovich (TSym)

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): Tragic is popular. lol

fyre (fyreflower): niuce G

Udah (VampireAndVegan): Is there a way to get characters to actually move faster against the background when they are running? I noticed in a few videos.

Chantal Harvey: godiva, wanna introduce and want feedback after? and shall we show them together? or apart

Chantal Harvey: oh sorry udah

Udah (VampireAndVegan): No problem. it can wait

Opal Lei: If you separate the background and green-screen the character, you can speed up the character maybe while editing?

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): yes

Udah (VampireAndVegan): TY

The Goddess™ (VictoriaHoneydew): ^^

Godiva Varela: sure, together Chantal

Godiva Varela: hello everyone, well these are videos that i made for LL, they have end of the year celebration theme, i’ve built both places where they take place and also made the windlights

Saffia Widdershins: You can also just speed up the film in editing – but that won’t work for every shot

Chantal Harvey: ok, no more questions for L’vóvich?

Fakey (Fake Jewell): Or you can make a running ball

Udah (VampireAndVegan): TY

Chantal Harvey: ok, lets give the floor to godiva now

Pryda (Pryda Parx): you can change the speed of animations, for you only, then used a sit on object and move the object to sync with the animation playbeck (locally)

Godiva Varela: woops sorry hehehe, and regarding that question you can change speed of the avatar on the developer menu Developer>Avatar>Animation speed

Chantal Harvey: 6 minutes meeting time left

Arido Taurajo

An International collaboration that brought disciplines together, creating a production that embraces new music composing and film techniques.

(ALYSIA http://tryalysia.com/ : Automated LYrical Songwriting Application) was recently used to create an Italian aria that was filmed in virtual reality.

We trained our songwriting system on Puccini music, calling the resulting system ROBOCCINI. James Morgan (Faculty at the Department of Art and Art History at SJSU) then collaborated with ROBOCCINI to create the following Italian aria.

The aria tells the story of a female warrior from World of War Craft, struggling to balance her family life with the call to adventure.

The machine learning system used to make the melody is created by Maya Ackerman, David Loker, and Chris Cassion.

We are currently submitting the film to festivals.

UWA Machinima Challenge 2018

March 25, 2018.

I was asked to head a panel of jury for the very last UWA machinima challenge in Second Life.  Together with Harnake HunspalTess Baxter (Tizzy Canucci) and Craig Harbison, we watched and selected the winners.

The competition was organisedby JayJay Zifanwe with the the University of Western Australia, and made possible by Lapiscean Liberty, Eliza Weirwight, FreeWee Ling,  Singh Albatross, Kaylee West, Pooky Amsterdam, and many many more. Jayjayhas actively been promoting immersive art and machinima made by Second Life residents for the past 9 years.

A special dedication was mentioned to Alizarin Goldflake and to Hugh Hancock, without hero’s like these, there would be no machinima as we know it.

About the Competition
THEME: Create a film with a work of art!
SUBJECT MATTER: Any artworks that sit on the UWA Sims in Second Life, and these include artworks created when the sims themselves were created in 2009 can be selected to feature in your machinima. The artwork(s) need to be a relatively significant part of the story, and not merely something glimpsed in passing.

I will copy/paste the chat, with some pictures i took, but first lets share the winners!

1. Glasz DeCuir, ART & IDS

2. Tutsi Navarantha: Serendipity

3: Karima Hoisan & Natascha Randt: The river of forgetting

4. Isabelle Cheren: Before the world was made

5. Bryn Oh: Cerulea

Greetings everyone, and welcome to the University of Western Australia, or UWA as she is known, and also welcome to the winners announcements for Slartist@UWA Machinima Challenge 2018. As is tradition at UWA, I would like to acknowledge that the University is situated on Nyoongar land and that the Nyoongar people remain the spiritual and cultural custodians of their land and continue to uphold their values, languages, beliefs and knowledge.

Jayjay Zifanwe: Pretty sad day for me personally, and for all art in Second Life as we just learned that one of her finest exponents, Alizarin Goldflake has passed on peacefully after fighting a long illness. I met Alizarin in 2009, and she was one of the first artists at UWA. We have her artwork, ‘The Maze’ set up close to the Hackett Buildings. The artwork was one of the first 3 works received when UWA commenced their challenges. I received it when I was running the art events myself. I didn’t know what to do or how to do it. Before quadrapop Lane took over the art curation, before FreeWee Ling. Alizarin had to tell me not to try and wear her artwork like a HUD. Rest in Peace Alizarin.

The day is also sad as it brings to an end the grand art and film challenges run by UWA, which started almost a decade ago in 2009, with Alizarin and other pioneers, who included Soror Nishi & Oberon Onmura. In the past there had been tough times and moments when it looked we wouldn’t make it this far, but we scrambled and pulled through, and now when we bring things to a close, we bring the curtains down at a time of our own choosing, and no better way than  through this challenge which would not exist if not for one of the unsung heroes of Second Life, LaPiscean Liberty  founder of SLARTIST & AviewTV. UWA came into the art and film fold as some of the previous great champions, Betina Tizzy of Not Possible IRL, Lumiere Noir of the Ivory Tower of Prims and Jopsy Pendragon of the Particle Laboratory were pulling back, and I think we started a different chapter in the art and film history of virtual worlds…. likewise as we disappear into the digital night, other will emerge and take the lead.

Whats pleasing though is that we’re closing the circle on film and art challeges at a time and place of our own choosing. Many of the award presentation events were held at the UWA-BOSL Grand 4-SIM Amphitheatre created by Patch Thibaud, but the very first Machinima awards ceremony we held, was right here, where Cisko Vandevere of Germany walked away with the grand prize! Anyway its not the end of the UWA Sims, which will be around another year with FreeWee Ling perhaps running art activities.

[06:02] LaPiscean Liberty: Thank you Mate

[06:03] FreeWee Ling: 🙂

[06:04] Kaylee West: yes

[06:04] Yeya Zuta: yes

Jayjay Zifanwe: As previously mentioned, the ‘title sponsor’ for the event is LaPiscean Liberty, and what he started  mushroomed as many things in SL that we have been involved does and evolved into a wonderful partnership with many other groups and individuals including Singh Albatross and The Writers Centre, Singapore who gave us the wonderful ‘Merlion’ part of the challenge, Language teacher, Kip Boan & Virtlantis a long term sponsor for UWA events, and Pooky Amsterdam, doyen of the machinima world with PookyMedia. The final sponsor of course is the UWA Virtual Worlds Project. Much thanks for this amazing prize pool of L$430,000,

[06:04] Suzie Anderton: yep..loud and clear

[06:04] Chantal Harvey: thanks Jayjay

[06:04] Amelie Marcoud claps

Jayjay Zifanwe: The theme of the SLartist@UWA Machinima Challenge was ‘ART OF THE ARTISTS.’ Collaborations and partnerships are something we have always wanted to encourage in SL. In fact, on the 24th of June 2010, I was asked to give an address at Second Life’s 7th birthday celebrations, and II titles my speech “Unexpected Collaborations in Second Life” http://uwainsl.blogspot.com.au/2010/06/unexpected-collaborations-uwainsl-and.htm

Anyway for this current event, we encouraged connections and collaborations between 3D artists and machinima makers. Any artworks that sat  on the UWA Sims in Second Life at any point in time, going back to artworks created when the sims themselves were created in 2009, could be selected to feature in the machinimas. Filmmakers could choose individual artworks or a collection of artworks around which to weave a story, and machinima makers could work with the artists to film anywhere. It did not have to be shot on these grounds. Much acknowledge here Eliza Weirwight who created the artwork for the poster for this event. She has created the poster for events at UWA for as long as I remember and has always given us something truly special.

Its been an absolute pleasure for me to work with all of you over the course of these challenges, and over the years, and especially to those who went above and beyond the call of duty to make all of this a success. Thank you for being here. I acknowledge one last time that the UWA Art, Architectural & Machinima Challenges, the teaching & research have seen people from all corners of the globe involved, with students, artists, builders, researchers and machinimatographers hailing from Turkey, Kuwait, Romania, Indonesia, Malaysia, Lithuania, Singapore, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Finland, Greece, India, Colombia, Poland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, Taiwan, Hungary, Latvia, Russia, Venezuela,  Belgium, Mexico, Wales, Canada, the USA, the UK, Uruguay, Scotland, England, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, France, the French Carribean, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Denmark,  Holland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Austria, Cuba, Serbia, Tunisia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and parts unknown. More

[06:07] quadrapop: quicker to say which countries HAVE NOT been represented lol

[06:07] Allie Tomsen: smiles

[06:07] FreeWee Ling: Gonna miss those litanies.

Jayjay Zifanwe: A special thanks goes  to FreeWee Ling, curator of art at UWA & RL Honorary Fellow at UWA. I have already mentioned La Piscean, but this is probably my last chance to do so in public, so, just want to thank him again. He has been for so many years and still is, and we hope always will be a champion of machinima in Second Life. A lot of great things at UWA would not have been possible if not for this wonderful, reliable gentleman being there and with FreeWee Ling supporting everyone and everything across the sims.

[06:07] Karima Hoisan: www mw too

[06:08] Dale: awwwww

[06:08] LaPiscean Liberty: The Thanks goes to you and Free and the Community

[06:08] Jayjay Zifanwe: We’re very proud of a number of innovations pioneered by UWA. Year Long Challenge with Monthly Awards

That was my first foray into the SL art world. Announcing a year long challenge when I had no curator, no artspace, no knowledge of SL art. I was told by quite a few including Bettina Tizzy that there was no way we could sustain interest. That 1 month in SL was 1 year RL. But, I didn’t listen to that sage advice, and thankfully providence sent down the first of many angels who had assisted across the years in the form of quadrapop Lane, and that first year was an incredibly successful one managing to build an art community.

[06:08] Karima Hoisan: Thank you LaPscean!

[06:08] tutsy Navarathna: 🙂

[06:09] quadrapop: lots of fun  too

[06:09] Iono Allen: quadrapop an angel! I knew that! 🙂

Jayjay Zifanwe: Art Receiver. We constructed an art receiver in 2009 in time for the first art challenge when something similar didn’t really exist in SL. I knew what I wanted it to do and had help from a number of scripters to create it. This allowed anyone to ‘drop’ their artwork in the receiver as a way to submit rather than have to give it to another avatar

Jayjay Zifanwe: Immediate Exhibition of Artwork and Machinima. Most art exhibitions, the art is received and all collected and then set up and then when fully ready open to all. With us, we wanted anything that came in immediately displayed and highlighted on the blog, and this is what we did from the start both with artwork and machinima. Made it very tough for the curators across the years, but they managed magnificently in having to constantly change and adjust the gallery to accommodate the growing list of works for every challenge

Audience Participation Prize. We tried people’s choice awards, but found it put pressure on artists  in an undue manner, and we wanted to find a way to make things different from a popularity contest, so for our awards, the audience had to ‘guess’ the top 10 as they thought the judges would decide, this way, anyone who wanted to take part would have to see all the artwork before providing an educated guess, with no pressure on them to ‘vote’ for friends and no pressure on artists to ask for favours

Sim is full, set to 55. Lets push the number up.

Jayjay Zifanwe: Collaboration Art Challenge. The 2nd year of the grand challenges (or maybe the 3rd) was one which brought the many major art groups across SL together including Pirats, Uni of Texas San Antonio, SL Art, Odyssey, CARP, Nordan Art, BOSL,  S&S Gallery of Fine Art, Tornado Gallery… where we provided L$5,000 each month in the names of 5 of these art groups, and some putting up their own prizes)

Jayjay Zifanwe : Judging Panel Construction. Many challenges we had panels of between 20-30 people from all walks of life and all over the SL & RL world. We did this to reduce the influence of any single judge and not allow one or two individuals to have to big a say.

Jayjay Zifanwe: And that brings us nicely to this next portion, prior to getting to the awards. Judging was done completely differently this time, and I do want to acknowledge amazing judging panel we had. There were 4 distinct sets of judges here. The main judging panel, led by the mother of SL machinima, Chantal Harvey! The panel was brought together by Chantal, who was the panel chair, with other judges being:

– Chantal Harvey – Judging Panel Chair

– Harnake Hunspal – Freelance Producer and Director

– Tess Baxter (SL: tizzy canucci) – Digital artist and PhD candidate in contemporary art at Lancaster University

Craig Harbison – CEO of Diamond gate Films,

[06:13] Allie Tomsen: yay

Jayjay Zifanwe: The panel for the Merlion Prize, was jointly led by Singh Albatross and Kaylee West

The panel for the PookyMedia Prize, led by Pooky Amsterdam

The panel for the UWA Prize & Craft Prizes, was led by yours truly, Jayjay.

The Slartist website carries all the machinima and can be found here: https://www.slartist.com/browse-slartist-at-uwa-videos-1-date.html

Jayjay Zifanwe shouts: Now heading for the finale, we move to the top 5

Jayjay Zifanwe: This machinima centres around one of Bryn’s own creations and one of the pane; commented, “The dreamlike quality of the work is very successful. The mise-en-scene is visually appealing.  The film has the right duration.  I think the music track works well with the concept.  Bryn ‘s virtual art and machinima are stunning together. The graphics and the pace of the film, the sound effects and the music, it is a perfect match. I really like this film, it is beautifully made, and has a sweet narrative – I even like the title”

One of the panel offered, “The concept of this film is very good; it is beautifully made, very artistic and creative.  The section in the middle almost feels like it belongs to a different film, and I appreciate it as a separate entity. I like the delivery of the poem, it is easy to follow. There is a dream-like feel to this film, very soothing.”

Jayjay Zifanwe: This sumptuous creation, features the work of artist Silas Merlin, where they worked together with him, or rather received his permission is tweaking the artwork to suit the needs of the film. A panel member commented,  “Well made, good detail. Script follows the imagery. Some sequences have amazing artistic skill. The wonderful edit certainly plays a big part in the success of this film. The story takes you by the hand. I like the way this film takes one artwork as a concept, instead of showcasing it.”

[07:06] Jayjay Zifanwe: Karima a few words for silas?

[07:06] Silas Merlin: 🙂

[07:06] Natascha Randt: It is really a great honor for me that our movie won 3d  place. Unbelievable…I go Crazy:)

First of all I want to thank the ones who made this challenge possible: LaPiscean Liberty & Slartist, as well as Singh Albatros and The Writers Center, Singapore, Pooky Amsterdam & PookyMedia, FreeWee Ling and Jayjay Zinfanwe and the UWA . And its a great pleasure for me, to thank all who are involved in River of Forgetting!

Of course Silas Merlin without whom this film would not exist, for his support and his confidence in us. Dale Innis, without whom the ship would still be just standing around instead of doing what ships do,sinking or sailing on the water. And for the many scripts that make the impossible possible. For me, that’s pure magic. Our cast, Joey, Maria, Reini, and Beeflin who were always there to do exactly what they should. You are so great! And it’s so much fun to work with you

At this point I would like to sing out Reini, because he looked just like I imagined such a fur seal. Exactly like that! However, all actors are always nice and dear to me and I can not overestimate that when someone voluntarily submits to my command!

Last but not least, Karima, because she lured me, and not for the first time, into an adventure that seemed impossible at first sight. As always, we have gone far beyond our original goal. Thats why we called THE TEAM!

[07:06] Amelie Marcoud: there we go

The film is artistic, with beautiful imagery and quotes to create a uniform structure and theme.  Good and appropriate music track. This film shows a lot of the virtual art presented at UWA, and honors it rightly. I like the narrative, the film has you captured from start to finish.”

Jayjay Zifanwe shouts: And so it is, one of the greatest champions at UWA falls just short twice in a row at the final hurdle. Tutsy’s record is unparalleled! Tutsy has featured in every single UWA film challenge except the very first one, and has been in the top 3 every single time, with only Laurina Hawks, Bradley Dorchester, Vilvi Rae and Kobuk Farshore having ever finished ahead of him. The Chief judge commented, ”I really like this piece, it is well planned, artistic and creative. Good work. The theme of the ‘head’ links the film throughout.  I also really like the closing sequence, it’s different to the rest of the film but it works really well as a resolution. The music track suits the concept. The edit is outstanding and fits the music, there is a story told. This film works beyond the Second Life environment and honors the artworks. Excellent use of pastiche/collage.Visuals and music worked together well”

[07:18] Natascha Randt: she has something in RL to do, she told me

[07:19] Karima Hoisan: Bravo Bravo!! Glasz!’

[07:19] Jayjay Zifanwe: Glasz advised me that for future instead of doing ‘Art of the Artists’ in future, we should have done ‘Machinima of the Machinimists’, with focus on Machinima. That’s a great idea actually and perhaps one forumation could be constructed such that artists create an artwork as a response to a machinima. All that I leave to the next generation, who will step in as the curtains come down here.

[07:19] Chantal Harvey: lets do that

[07:20] Yeya Zuta: great idea

[07:20] Jayjay Zifanwe: It has been an honour for me over the years, the accidental art and film caretaker over the years to work with so many of you and have the privilege of viewing your art and film. The relationships built here have crossed over to RL as well, as I have met a number of artists and filmmakers from SL in RL, with FreeWee Ling spending a few months at UWA on an Australia-US Fellowship as well. The people of SL have helped my older son win a number of Peoples Choice events, as sometime over the past 2 years he suddenly became quite a successful filmmaker being selected for 4 Academy Award qualifying festivals, and when I travel to Denmark this July with my younger son for the World Triathlon championships, another SL artist has offered to put us up for a while and show us around. Life has been definitely richer because of my involvement with SL, and I hope the friendships created will last well beyond the middle of 2019, when the digital night is likely to set on the UWA sims themselves. Thank you one and all.

[07:20] FreeWee Ling: I think we’ve done pretty well by the machinimists. 😉

[07:20] Dale: Thanks for it all!

[07:21] serra Qendra: cheers JJ

The Spacenavigator

Filming in Second Life with the Spacenavigator – I found out the hard way that the driver updates (for Windows 10) will not work with the 3dconnexion mouse. So, a clean install of the old 3.16.3 r1447 drivers fixed the problem! It is also on the cd that came with your SpaceNavigator 🙂
The link to the old driver is here:   3dconnexion

spacenavigator

In case this doesn’t work, as the issue is not related to the windows 10 driver of 3Dconnexion but to the poor implementation of Joystick API of Second Life viewers (standard & firestorm), follow the following steps after installing the drivers.

You need to deactivate the HID controller associated with “3Dconnexion KMJ Emulator”. Unfortunately second life viewer only recognizes the first alphabetic driver, i.e. K of KMJ before S of Spacenavigator. (Actually this was true with windows 7 as well, so it is definately not a W10 issue).

How?

In Windows, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. Select the Device Manager from the left pane, and then choose the Human Interface Devices and check to see if you have a device called 3Dconnexion KMJ Emulator. You may or may not be able to disable this device (Properties > Driver > Disable), but disable it if you can. Additionally, find a HID-compliant device, HID-compliant game controller, or HID-compliant consumer control device, and check the Hardware ID (Properties > Details > Hardware IDs), looking for HID\3DXKMJ_HIDMINI&Col03 as the topmost value. When you find the device, disable it from the Driver tab.

A brilliant explanation is to be found on NALATES blog.

She mentiones that you should close all other applications while setting the properties in your SpaceNavigator settings, and this did the trick for me. The nav will make any application that is open the key app, and as I use it mainly in Second Life……

Thanks, Erythro Asimov, for your help!

Spencer Museum of Art in Second Life – gone!

One of my favorite spots in the virtual world of Second Life is the Spencer Museum of Art. I have been filming there, for my Robotworld series. After weeks of trying to teleport over, with no luck, I contacted Inara Pey, and she investigated – only to come back to me with the bad news: the sim is gone.

Crazy, that it has been gone for weeks, and nobody even noticed, it seems?  Sigh. It cannot be just me, I heard that it is a favorite hangout for many Linden employees, and their director Ebbe Altberg.

Can one be sad, over the lost of a virtual place? Certainly. I am.

robotworld-chantalharvey-spencermuseumofart

robotworld-chantalharvey-spencermuseumofart

I met many people there, only recent spent hours talking with an Italian filmmaker and art curator, sitting on the giant couch, commenting in awe on the art surrounding us. The outstanding art machinima by Toxic Menges was shot there, recently showcased in Leicester UK, at the machinima convention – which featured mr. machinima Hugh Hancock himself (so glad I met him!).

INternational Machinima Convention

I was filming, never finished the machinima – a hard lesson to be learned. As my mum used to tell me: never postphone … she was right, of course.

The Ma Machinima Salon 2016

On October 7, my new movie ‘Activate Your Higher Mind’ is premiering in San Francisco, California. The show is an exclusive event, if you want to attend you need to contact me so I can put you on the guest list.  You are very welcome!

ChantalHarvey-2016-mamachinima-salon-invitation

The film (machinima) is a one hour vision on Art in Virtual Reality, and perhaps a retrospect on 8 years in Second Life, but more so a very personal journey into the future.

Please send me an email (chantalharvey -at -outlook-dot-com) or personal message on Facebook, so I can put you on the guest list, and give you details about location and time.
Special thanks to Cathy and DC Spensley for hosting the Mamachinima Salon.

INternational Machinima Convention

What is Machinima?

Machinima: Games-based filmmaking. Machinima is a filmmaking technique that uses video game assets to provide virtual environments and actors. This method has existed since 1996, and has rapidly evolved alongside developments in games, animation, and film.

What is the IMC?
The International Machinima Convention aims to bring together students, academics, and those with an interest in games, animation, and film, in order to discuss the potential for machinima as a medium.  With a list of world-class academics, machinima producers, and YouTube content creators, this event will provide an amazing insight into the world of machinima.

No Way!

Re-edit of our 2011 official entry for the Doritos Super Bowl Contest.
Chantal Harvey & Tony Dyson,  a mamachinima.com production.

Awesome voice over work from Brian Albury and Liat Reina!
Tony wrote the story-line, and directed. I filmed and edited. The filming was done in Second Life, and it was absolute fun to do. We ran into many problems, I remember the frustration as Tony and Judi Newall (who handled the dragon avatars) would position their avatars in a straight line, but I would see them pointing sideways. I saw the dragon distorted in crazy positions, while they both insisted the dragon was flying around and looking fine. My recording software (Fraps) ate the frame rate, and the scripts caused lag, it messed up my camera view – and as I am the camera, what I see is what will be on the film…. I ended up clearing cache and logging out and back in, at least 15 times an hour, to get maybe 8 seconds of good film. It all came together when Markus Parker-Rhodes (yes, the Monty Pythons Flying Circus animator) created the scripted breaking glass prop for us. Ok, the glass would break too soon or too late, but we got it in the end.

We submitted the film for the Superbowl Doritos Contest in 2011, and it was disappointing to hear we didn’t make the selection. We published it anyway, under the title: Dad saved the Day.

I found the original files when clearing one of my hard-drives, and decided to have another go at it. Tony, I hope i did justice to the film 🙂

Tony Dyson, my personal memorial tribute.

Best known for being R2-D2s ‘Dad’.

His website is gone, but archived here.
His facebook page.

Tony was honoured at the BAFTA 2017 ceremony.  The British Academy of Film and Television Arts gave credits to the man that created R2D2 for Star Wars, and one of my own photographs was used for this. (with permission, of course!). Aired on BBC television on February 12, 2017. He would have loved this!

In memory of Tony Dyson

tonydyson-©chantalharvey-adieu

Special Effects Designer
13 April 1947 to 3 March 2016

A British special effects designer and expert in robotics, Dyson’s first film job came designing the jetpacks for Moonraker (1979). He was best known for the R2-D2 robots for Star Wars (1977), which included remote control versions, stunt versions, and models that could seat performer Kenny Baker.

I worked with Tony since 2011, we met online in Second Life, and he agreed to be head of jury for the 48 Hour Film Project Machinima. We soon started creating machinima together, which he called ‘real time animation’. In 2013 we met in Malta, and I quit my day-job to work full-time on producing animated shorts and e-books with Tony. We met again in Finland for the Robotics conference, and later in Gozo, Xlendi, where we rented an office together.

Tony was more than a tutor, he was my inspiration and best friend. There are plenty of stories to tell about him, and our projects, but today I will share a personal memory.

Today, March 7th, 2016 – just 6 days before his 69th birthday – his ashes will be spread in Gozo.

To honor Tony, and the bond we had, I am sharing the only photograph that shows both of us together (I took hundreds of photo’s of Tony) and a poem he wrote for me, years ago.

Dawn has gone
Dusk is upon us once again
Swallows are resting
Bats are hunting
The Night Angels prepare our spirits for flight

Only our soul knows the true journey ahead
Only our soul knows our deepest desires
So listen to my voice and see my dreams unfold
For I will be heard above life’s din
I am mortal of flesh and bone and will have my time before I die
To see the colors of the rainbow up high

Touch me not with gold so bright,
Touch me not with ebony so dark
Touch me not with marble so cold
Touch me not with hands so eager
But touch my heart with love and truth and I will be yours for ever, Chantal.

The future of virtual reality and moviemaking.

ChantalHarvey2015

Pixar’s Ed Catmull: It’s not storytelling
David Attenborough: It gives you a dozen different stories
Chet Faliszek: You can slow gamers down
Mike Woods: VR demands interaction
Nicole Stenger: Hyperreality is a trend
Werner Herzog: We might live in VR
Baptiste Charles: VR is an insanely compelling way to tell stories, be they fiction or not
VR Circle: a lot of the excitement related to virtual reality has to do with the film industry, where the whole concept has disruptive potential.
The Wrap: it will likely be indie filmmakers who first master the format, Hollywood will follow
