The LAIUFF is a true independent festival in every sense.  Aiming to inspire, motivate and award the true innovative and artistic geniuses of our time.

Every independent artist hopes to one day emerge from the underground scene and share their talents with the masses.  Hopefully the showcase platform we provide will help facilitate that dream. The 5th Annual Berlin Independent Film Festival (BIFF), is showcasing the work of new filmmakers who have achieved remarkable feats with tiny budgets.

Having evolved this year from the Berlin arm of the European Film Festival, BIFF’s program of films and high-energy networking events will combine a commitment to the ideals of independent filmmaking with a solid understanding of the global marketplace. Taking place in one of the world’s most intriguing cities, BIFF offers attendees the chance to mingle with film fans and industry players who are all well-versed in the universal language of cinema.

Hosted at the Babylon, one of Berlin’s most majestic theaters, BIFF offers 10 days of screenings, parties, and discussions that are sure to inform and inspire. BIFF honors films and screenplays across a broad spectrum of competitive categories, including Documentary Feature, Sci-Fi/Horror Feature, and Animated Short, to name just a few. From music videos to “No Budget Features,” BIFF aims to explore diverse formats, styles, perspectives, and genres.

Evenings offer social events designed to broaden networks and spark relationships. Afternoons include “skills-share” workshops awash with marketing advice geared towards helping independent films reach new and greater heights. The result is an event that sharpens every tool at a filmmaker’s disposal, while offering opportunities to connect and collaborate with like-minded artists.

Entries can be character animations in any medium, from CG animation (Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, Animation:Master, etc.) to traditional 2D animation to stop-motion. Consider posting your progress videos in the Work in Progress forum. Feedback and criticism will make your animation stronger!
This month’s clip is a good chance to work on subtext, with the main character’s words not necessarily matching up with what he’s thinking. Enjoy!

In order to spend the majority of your time on the animation, please take advantage of the free character rigs we’ve linked to in the Resources section, and avoid spending a lot of time on lighting/rendering/etc.

  • Copyrighted rigs and/or character designs will not be allowed in entries unless the entrant has the right to use the rig and/or design. The “Azary” and “Ashrafi” rigs are specifically NOT allowed.
  • Don’t edit the sound file (beyond adding silence before/after if needed – please try to keep the extra time to a minimum, winning eCritiques will not include added time)
  • Don’t put your name or contact info anywhere on the actual video (this makes voting unfair).
  • Don’t try to upload files more than 10MB (the server will automatically reject it).
  • Don’t use anything overtly offensive (this is not the place for crude sexual humor, extremely violent imagery, or intolerance towards any culture/religion/gender/etc.) This is also not the place for political statements of any kind.

The UNITED FILM FESTIVAL

Films & Screenplays

The United Film Festival offers the opportunity for filmmakers to submit to six unique festivals in Los Angeles, New York, London, San Francisco, Chicago, and Tulsa. With a different programming committee in each city along with rolling deadlines, they are able to showcase a diverse line-up of narratives, documentaries, and shorts.

UFF offer special United Packages to submit to all six cities at once, or three cities of your choosing. Submitters also have the option of adding Feedback to their submission, allowing them to receive notes from our programming committee after the festivals.

UFF Screenwriting Contest offers even more opportunities to both short and feature screenwriters in Comedy, Drama, and Horror/Thriller categories.

The Florida Film Festival 2013

Each year the Florida Film Festival premieres the best in current, independent, and international cinema. Now in our 22nd year, we invite movie lovers to discover the world waiting for them in the dark. This year’s Festival features more than 160 cutting-edge films, some 100 visiting filmmakers and special guests, and special events you’ll never forget.

An oasis for both film lovers and filmmakers in the Southeast, the Florida Film Festival is an annual showcase for the best in American Independent and Foreign Cinema. This 10 day celebration of filmmakers and their art includes an American Independent Film Competition for features, docs, shorts, and animation, along with an International Showcase, Spotlight Films (those already with distribution), Midnight Movies, Florida Student Works, Special Screenings,Tributes, Special Guests, Panels & Seminars, parties, and more. The 13th Annual Phoenix Film Festival (PFF), is an eight-day celebration of filmmakers, storytelling, and the creative community. Particularly adventurous festival guests can register for the DocuDenton 7K: a race to create a short documentary on a subject unique to Denton, Texas. For this exciting competition, teams of one or more draw a random topic from a hat and then have five days in which to shoot and edit a short documentary. Thin Line welcomes filmmakers who push the boundaries of their craft. The festival explores the full depth of the documentary genre, celebrating hybrid forms such as docufictions, mockumentaries, docudramas, animated documentaries, and others, alongside more traditionally structured films. Thin Line recognizes that a documentary is driven not only by the facts it employs but also by the innate creativity of its maker, and the festival applauds that creativity above all else. Thin Line even slips a “fake” documentary in among the “real” ones each year – and doesn’t tell you which is which.

Nearly every film screened at Thin Line is followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, and this year, $20,000 USD in cash and prizes will be awarded to the best long-form and short-form documentaries.
