Open call for entries, for the LIFF – Leeds International Film Festival

Founded in 1987 and hosted in the main city of the UK’s Yorkshire region, Leeds International Film Festival is renowned as a dynamic event with a reputation for challenging and innovative programming. Last year LIFF presented a huge variety of exceptional films at over 250 screenings and events at a wide variety of sites across the city, from cinemas and clubs to the newly customised, 1,000-capacity venue at Leeds Town Hall. LIFF features high-profile programme sections including: the competitions of the Official Selection; Fanomenon, the UK’s largest genre event; Short Film City; documentary strand Cinema Versa; exclusive Retrospectives and archive classics; and the Thought Bubble Comic Convention. LIFF is organised by Leeds Film, part of Leeds City Council, a local authority in the Yorkshire region of the UK. Leeds Film also organise Leeds Young People’s Film Festival.

RETROSPECTIVES
LIFF has long been dedicated to unearthing rarely screened classics from the archive and importing rare film prints from around the world. We have established a new section to showcase a broad selection celebrating film history. In 2012 we screened a retrospective selection of the groundbreaking Japanese actress/director Kinuyo Tanaka alongside the early Soviet films of Andrei Konchalovsky, silent classics and an overview of recent Portuguese cinema.

GENERAL RULES
Eligibility:
• Feature Films must be submitted to the Film Festival by Friday 30th August and Shorts by 20th September 2013.
• Only films completed after 1st January 2012 will be considered for the competitive sections. However, the Film Festival does consider archive film programming and older films for non-competitive sections, which can be submitted in the same way as new ones.
• Any genre and any length of film will be considered – anything under 45 minutes is classified as a short, anything over 45 minutes is classified as a feature.
• The film must not have appeared on British television.

Premiere Policy:
• UK premieres will be prioritised in the selection process in all Film Festival sections, especially for the Official Selection. However, we do not categorically insist on UK premieres – this is up to the discretion of the Film Festival team.

The 13th Annual LUNAFEST Film Festival is seeking a diverse range of short films which embody the unique, touching, and inspirational roles of women in our local, national, and international communities. Films must be 20 minutes or less in runtime, and directed and/or produced by a female. There is no limit on the year of production. Winning filmmakers are awarded $1,000 USD cash.

The Midway Deadline is February 1.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
In addition to providing national exposure for emerging women filmmakers, LUNAFEST also supports the communities we live in today by donating a portion of the proceeds from the festival to the Breast Cancer Fund (BCF) as well as to local host organizations. The BCF is a San Francisco based non-profit that works to identify- and advocate for the elimination of environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. 15% of all net proceeds of the festival go to the BCF and 85% go back into the local women’s organizations and communities that host the festival.

The 13th Annual Cape Fear Independent Film Festival (CFI) welcomes films and filmmakers from all over the world, providing a venue for the undiscovered independent filmmaker to get their work in front of an audience. CFI is also particularly interested in films made in the great state of North Carolina. The setting of Dino de Laurentiis’s 1984 nail-biter Firestarter , the city of Wilmington continues a long and proud tradition of professional filmmaking that has earned it the nickname of “Hollywood East.” Honoring both short and feature-length films, CFI combines the thrill of Hollywood with the down-home charms of the American Southeast for an experience unlike any other on the festival circuit.

Last year’s CFI featured the world premiere of American Battleship, an improvisational workshop with comedian Brooklin Green, a discussion panel with industry tips from professional actors, and a slew of other incredible opportunities for networking and talent development. High Sierra, the 2012 winner of CFI’s Best Documentary Award, aired on PBS during Thanksgiving, and numerous other CFI alumni have reaped a variety of accolades and screening opportunities. SILVERDOCS, AFI’s premier documentary program, is held each June just outside Washington, DC at the AFI Silver Theatre & Cultural Center as well as in the heart of the District. The 2013 Festival will take place June 19-23.

In just eleven years SILVERDOCS has become “the pre-eminent US documentary festival” according to Screen International and was cited as one of the ten most interesting film festivals—of any kind––in the world by Variety.

The five-day program presents the very best of contemporary documentary filmmaking from across the globe, including numerous world and international premieres and works by master and emerging filmmakers alike. The GI Film Festival aims to preserve the stories of American GIs, promote the work of active duty military and military veteran filmmakers, and honor struggles for freedom around the globe.

Last year, the Pentagon Channel began broadcasting a weekly television series showcasing GIFF films. This series, which will continue in 2013, was delivered to 30 million homes nationwide as well as all military bases worldwide, providing GIFF filmmakers with extraordinary exposure to the audiences they are most eager to celebrate and explore. All films submitted to GIFF, whether official selections of the festival or not, are considered for this weekly series.

The 7th Annual GI Film Festival (GIFF), is honoring the successes and sacrifices of the American GI through the power of big-picture storytelling. Unfolding during Armed Forces Appreciation Month and against the majestic backdrop of America’s capital city, GIFF brings Hollywood and the United States military together for a festival that’s uniquely dedicated to celebrating the too-often unsung stories of heroism at home and abroad. Films submitted to GIFF must portray at least one real or fictitious military-oriented character in a respectful manner. The festival also welcomes submissions from filmmakers who have served in the US military, even if their respective projects do not address military topics or personnel.

Films selected to participate will be exhibited before diverse audiences that include active duty military, veterans, military families, military enthusiasts, top military brass, members of Congress, and powerful industry players who are specifically scouting military-themed films. Participating filmmakers are offered free access to Hollywood and Capitol Hill parties, guided tours of the Pentagon, and visits to local military hospitals, as well as access to GIFF’s unique “Filmmaker Boot Camp,” designed to equip cineastes with the practical tools needed to guide their projects into the industry marketplace.

GIFF proudly presents awards in five competitive categories, including Best Student Film, Best Narrative Feature, Best Narrative Short, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Documentary Short. In 2013, the director of the festival’s Best Narrative Feature Award-winning film will receive an “Associate Producer” role on the upcoming military-themed feature film Homecoming, produced by American Way productions.

The GI Film Festival is a recipient of the American Legion National Commander’s Public Relations Award, which has previously been bestowed on media luminaries including Tom Brokaw, Tim Russert, Lou Dobbs, and Jack Valenti. The festival also received the 2012 Carlton Sherwood Media Award from the National Blind Veterans Foundation and the 2007 George Washington Valley Forge Honor Medal from the Freedom Foundation.
